Restoring nature with care and precision.

Gaick State Peatland Project

Location : Kingussie

The Gaick peatland restoration project, situated at elevations between 450 and 600 metres above sea level, was completed and involved a range of peatland restoration techniques across the site.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd supported the works as a subcontractor, delivering a programme of mechanical interventions on Gaick Estate. These works included gully blocking, hag re-profiling and arc bunding, contributing to improved hydrology, habitat recovery and long-term peatland resilience.

Glenfeshie Estate Road Project

Location: Kingussie, Cairngorms National Park

Glenfeshie Estate is located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park and spans approximately 47,000 acres. The estate is widely recognised for its pioneering rewilding efforts and long-term landscape restoration programme.

As part of wider land management and access improvements, significant work has been undertaken to manage, and in some cases remove, historic hill tracks to help restore the natural landscape. The estate has also addressed challenges arising from natural events that have affected access routes.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd carried out the re-profiling and reconstruction of an access road on the estate, ensuring safe and reliable passage for estate operations and visitors while maintaining the ecological integrity of the surrounding environment.

Kingie Estate Peatland Project

Garrogie Estate Peatland Project

Location: Fort Augustus (near Whitebridge), Highlands, Scotland

Garrogie Estate is a mixed Highland estate located near Whitebridge, south of Inverness. The estate supports a range of land uses, including renewable energy infrastructure, sheep farming and recreational activities.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd supported substantial peatland restoration works on Garrogie Estate while operating as a subcontractor. The scope of works included drain blocking using both wave damming and standard damming techniques, zippering between dams, hag re-profiling, and gully blocking.

Kingie Estate, located near Invergarry in the Scottish Highlands, has undertaken a peatland restoration project as part of its wider environmental enhancement and land management programme.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd commenced restoration works on site in November 2024, supporting the estate’s objectives to improve peatland condition, enhance carbon sequestration, and promote biodiversity across the landscape.

The works have included a range of mechanical peatland restoration techniques, including gully blocking, hag re-profiling and ditch blocking. These interventions are designed to restore natural hydrology, stabilise degraded peat surfaces, and support long-term ecological recovery.

Strathcairn Ard Peatland Project

Location:Ullapool, Scottish Highlands

Mar Lodge Estate Peatland Project

Location: Braemar, Cairngorms National Park

Strathcairn Ard, located near Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, forms part of Scotland’s largest peatland restoration programme to date.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd has been supporting the project by supplying machinery and experienced operators, working in collaboration with the principal contractor, Highland Conservation.

The peatland restoration works have focused primarily on hag and gully re-profiling, alongside the installation of a combination of mineral dams and peat dams. These interventions are designed to restore natural hydrology, stabilise degraded peatland and support long-term ecological recovery across the site.

Mar Lodge Estate, managed by the National Trust for Scotland, is the UK’s largest National Nature Reserve, covering approximately 29,000 hectares in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.

M&M Beaton Planthire Ltd carried out peatland restoration works across the estate as part of its wider landscape restoration programme. The scope of works included fully blanket-turfed peat pans and gully re-profiling, supporting hydrological restoration and long-term peatland resilience.
